FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The Montreat College softball team lost a pair of closely contested games to Emmanuel College on Tuesday.

In the first game, the Lions got on the board with a run in the second inning and the game remained that way until the Cavaliers (0-8, 0-0 AAC) tied the game when Aly Woody (FR/Marion, NC) drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Montreat took a 2-1 lead when Malyn Nocera (FR/Knoxville, TN) led off with a solo home run. In the bottom of the inning, Emmanuel strung together five hits and drove in a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Lions would close things out from there and secure the victory.

In the second game, Mikki Shelton (FR/Old Fort, NC) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when her base hit drove in Kelsey Nolasco (FR/Casa Grande, AZ). The Lions added a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning and capitalized on two Montreat errors to tack on three more in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 4-1. The Cavaliers would rally in the seventh inning as Ashlyn Vickers (SO/Ellenboro, NC) doubled to drive in pinch runner Bree Powell (FR/Belmont, NC) to cut the lead to 4-2. Veronica Ellis (FR/Augusta, GA) followed up with a 2-run home run to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the frame, Emmanuel got a two-out base hit to drive in the winning run for a final 5-4 score. 

The Cavaliers wil be back in action on Saturday, February 11th when they kick off a double header at Thomas University at 1pm. 

ASHEVILLE, NC - The Appalachian Athletic Conference has announced winners of the individual awards for softball and several members of the Montreat College softball team received recognition for their efforts both on and off the field.

Outfielder Aubree Sluder (FR/Asheville, NC) was named to the AAC All-Freshman team. Sluder hit .299 on the season with 38 hits, including 5 doubles, a triple, and two home runs. She also led the team with 13 stolen bases and a .982 fielding percentage. 

Hunter Campbell (JR/Lincolnton, NC) was named to the Champions of Character team and eight team members were named to the All-Academic Team including Dezaree Avallone (SR/Shallotte, NC), Ashley Hurd (SO/Winston-Salem, NC), Kendra Johnson (SO/Ararat, NC), Morgan Meredith (SO/Coalfield, TN), Megan Recher (SR/Waxhaw, NC), Lauren Rowell (SO/Lancaster, SC), Amber Smith (SR/Boonville, NC), and Connor Townsend (JR/Morganton, NC).



BELMONT, NC - The Montreat College softball team concluded the 2016 season on Saturday as they dropped a double-header to Belmont-Abbey.

In the first game, the Crusaders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning. The scoring then ceased until the sixth inning when a Desirae Bebber (JR/Catfish, NC) single drove in Morgan Meredith (SO/Coalfield, TN) to cut the lead to 3-1. However, the Crusaders came back in the bottom of the inning to score six runs and seal a 9-1 victory. Montreat was limited to only four hits throughout the contest. 

In the second contest, Belmont-Abbey scored a run in the first and added four more in the fourth while keeping the Cavaliers scoreless in a 6-0 victory. Montreat got two hits apiece from Sydeny McAbee and Megan Recher (SR/Waxhaw, NC) but were unable to get any runs across the board in the loss.

The Cavalier's finish the season with a 7-41 record with a 3-17 mark in conference play.
