PINE MOUNTAIN, GA  - The Montreat College golf teams opened up their spring season by traveling to compete in the Point University Skyhawk Invitational this past Monday & Tuesday.

In the men's tournament, the Cavaliers would use a strong second day to finish in 11th place as a team. Taylor Johnson (JR/Statesville, NC) led the way with a 76 (+4) in the second round and that moved him up 15 positions from the previous day to finish in a tie for 32nd place at +12 (156). Dylan Jones (SR/Mill Spring, NC) also made a second day move up the leader board as his second round score of 77 improved his day one total by three strokes. Jones finished in a tie for 38th at +13 (157). Phillip Westberry (FR/Snellville, GA) finished in a tie for 46th with a +14 after shooting rounds of 80 and 78 over the two days.

Trey Goodson (FR/Jacksonville, NC) placed in a tie for 72nd place at +20 (164) while Bailey Wilson (FR/Foley, AL) (+24), Luke McGann (FR/Cary, NC) (+26), and Duncan Moody (FR/Cleveland, GA) (+38) also competed for the Cavalier men.

Three members of the women's team also competed over the weekend. Emily McFarland (FR/McLeansville, NC) finished in 65th place (+54) while Lauren Bullock (FR/Fuquay-Varina, NC) placed 72nd (+81). Samantha Telsrow (FR/Belmont, NC) had a ten stroke improvement on day two and finished in 73rd.

This was our first tournament back from the off-season, and I think the winter rust showed a little", said Head Coach John Sullivan. "We made up some ground on the second day with a 14 stroke improvement. Tee to green, they hit it fairly well, but we missed a lot of opportunities on and around the greens. We'll take the next two weeks before our conference event and put more work in on the areas that need improvement."

The men's team will be back in action April 4th-5th when they compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Spring Championship at Eagle's Brook Country Club in Locust Grove, GA. The women's team will compete in the AAC Spring Championships April 11th-12th at the Woodlands Country Club in Columbia, SC.

Montreat, NC - Montreat College head men's & women's golf coach John Sullivan continues to stockpile talent for the 2016-2017 season and this time he didn't have to go far to find it. On Friday, Sullivan announced the signing of Asheville's hometown Andrew Stewart to the men's Cavalier squad.

A senior at Erwin High School, Stewart is a three-time Erwin Player of the Year and finished 5th in the 2015 MAC Championships. Stewart was also named the WNC Junior Golf Association Player of the Year in 2015, after collecting two tournament titles and three runner-up finishes.

Stewart is also an accomplished scholar athlete, as he was named to the National Honors Society and the Duke TIPS program. He is looking forward to beginning his career at Montreat, saying "I chose Montreat because of the Chris-centered atmosphere. I am very excited to become a Cavalier and contribute to the golf team."

In speaking about Stewart, Coach Sullivan said, "We are very excited to have Andrew join us at Montreat. His playing experience and abilities will add some depth to our roster while providing a solid addition to an already strong foundation. His work ethic and character not only on the golf course but in the classroom make him a perfect fit for us as we look to take our program to the next level."

The son of John and Traci Stewart, Andrew plans to major in Business.

Laurinburg, NC - The Montreat College men's golf team traveled to Laurinburg, NC, on October 19th-20th to compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Fall Championship. The young Cavaliers squad placed 9th in the field of 11 teams competing in the tournament.

Taylor Johnson (JR/Statesville, NC) and Luke McGann (FR/Cary, NC) led the way for Montreat, with both players shooting 155 (+11) for the tournament, which was good for a 28th place tie. Dylan Jones (SR/Mill Spring, NC) shot a 157 (+13) to finish in a tie for 35th place. Trey Goodson (FR/Jacksonville, NC) finished in a tie for 41st place with his score of 160 (+16). Phillip Westberry (FR/Snellville, GA) rounded out the team effort for the Cavaliers, shooting a 161 (+17) to place in a tie for 45th.

"The guys struggled this week, but they fought hard the second day and made up some ground. We are a very young team, so the biggest challenge we've faced this season is getting all 5 players to play well at the same time. If we can do that, we will compete. We have a clear plan of what we need to work on going into the off-season", said Head Coach John Sullivan.

The team will wrap up their fall campaign as they travel to Columbia, SC to compete in the Columbia College Fall Invitational, November 2nd & 3rd.
