Lady Cavs Wrap Up Tremendous 2009 Season
Lady Cavs Wrap Up Tremendous 2009 Season
The volleyball team at Montreat College set school records during its 2009 season, but the future looks even brighter for the squad.

Head Coach Christine Mooberry completed her second year in charge of the Lady Cavaliers and
was able to reflect on a breakthrough season and applaud the women who set a Montreat College record with 26 match wins and advanced to the conference semi-finals in a performance that advertised what a handful the Lady Cavaliers will be in 2010 and beyond.

In finishing the season 26-19, the team improved on its 16-21 mark from 2008 and saw a number of its players receive year-end plaudits.

Two Middle Blockers were named All-Appalachian Athletic Conference, as Allison Baumgartner, a junior from Charlotte, NC, and Anna Stephenson, a sophomore from Lillington received that honor.

Further, Sophomore Outside Hitter Ellen Goodman from New York was named Second Team All-AAC and Alyssa Kaufman, a freshman Outside Hitter from Wisconsin, was tabbed for the AAC All-Freshman team.

Sophomore Setter Natalie Nieman made the All-AAC Tournament team after leading the Lady Cavaliers to the tournament semi-finals, and three players - Lyndsey Wall, Baumgartner, and Nieman - earned All-Academic awards.

While a well-deserved rest is in order for players and coaches, Mooberry is already eager for the 2010 season to start.  With Wall the only senior on the team and Baumgartner the only junior, Mooberry will begin next year with an extremely young team that has extensive experience and promising talent.

"We played 45 matches and over 175 sets this year, we traveled to Florida and Illinois and everywhere in between, we had great wins and trying moments, and we learned to play together and rely on each other.  2010 might be a big year for us."

Montreat College advanced to the semi-finals of the Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball tournament on Wednesday by winning their second consecutive pool play match with a 3-1 win over a resilient Milligan College team.

Head Coach Christy Mooberry and her players traveled to Kingsport, Tennessee needing as many as four victories to claim the AAC Tournament Championship, and by late Wednesday, they had collected two of those wins.

On Tuesday, the Montreat defeated UVA-Wise 3-0 in the opening game of pool play.   The 4th-seeded Lady Cavaliers met a team that had limped to a 4-12 conference record during the regular season and played an efficient match to advance with little trouble.

On Wednesday, the competition toughened as the Lady Cavaliers faced 5th-seeded Milligan College, against whom they had compiled a 1-1 record in the regular season, winning in 5 sets in October and losing in 4 sets in early November.

As that history indicated, a tough match awaited, and indeed, the Cavaliers battled through four long sets before prevailing 25-21, 30-28, 22-25, 25-17.  Natalie Nieman was at her best with Allie Baumgartner (14 kills), Alyssa Kaufman (13 kills) and Anna Stephenson (8 kills) among those who put away some of Nieman's 25 assists.  Mooberry also applauded the play of Ellen Goodman, who worked for 18 digs, 2 aces, and 8 kills of her own.

After besting Milligan, Montreat raised their record to 26-18 and advanced to face Bryan College in the tournament semi-finals on Thursday at 12:00 P.M.  Bryan presents a formidable obstacle, sporting a 15-1 regular season conference record which includes two wins over the Lady Cavaliers.

The marathon that was the Montreat College volleyball regular season drew to a close with an appropriately exhausting day on Saturday, November 7 as the women played two matches in two towns, splitting those contests, and then taking a circuitous route home to the valley late at night.

The Lady Cavaliers began their day with a 10:00 A.M. first serve against Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Bryan College.  The Lions played well, defeating the Cavaliers 12-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-16 despite 17 assists from setter Natalie Nieman and 7 kills each from Ellen Goodman and Alyssa Kaufman.  The 3-1 defeat left Montreat at 11-5 in the AAC and 23-18 overall.

It also left them with a few hours to drive from Dayton, Tennessee to Lookout Mountain on the state's southern border, where the women were set to play Covenant College in the final match of the regular season.

The Lady Cavaliers made the most of their 42nd contest of the year, downing the Scots 3-1 as Alyssa Kaufman worked for 20 digs, Lyndsey Wall provided 17 assists, and Allie Baumgartner put away 13 kills.  The 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21 win left the Lady Cavaliers with a 24-18 overall record.

The day was not over though, as a 5-hour ride home awaited the team, a time extended greatly by a rock slide on I-40 that caused numerous detours and delays.

Head Coach Christy Mooberry joked that the team could "sleep for a week."  Just not this week.  In fact, Montreat travels to Kingsport, Tennessee on Tuesday, November 10 for the first round of the AAC Tournament, which they enter as the #3 seed.

Maybe the players can rest on the ride to Kingsport.
