Marshall McDonald comes to Montreat College from Catawba Valley Community College

Marshall McDonald of Red Springs, North Carolina has just signed with the baseball team at Montreat College for the 2010 season. A first baseman coming off a strong season with Catawba Valley Community College, he posted some big numbers in his time there: a .392 batting average with 12 doubles, 10 homeruns and an on-base percentage of .482 in his last season. McDonald was also selected as the National Junior College Athletic Association #10 All-Region first baseman last season.

Mike Bender, Head Coach for the Cavaliers Baseball program is excited to have McDonald in the line-up for the upcoming season. He says, "Marshall is the type of player that you can build your program around. He is going to make immediate contributions to this team on and off the field. Montreat college baseball is very fortunate to have signed a player with his talent and his moral character."

Cavs close the year with third round loss in AAC Tournament
Cavs close the year with third round loss in AAC Tournament
The Montreat College baseball team saw its season come to a close with a 5-2 loss to Reinhardt College on Monday, May 10 in the third round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament in Kingsport, Tennessee.

In the opening game of the AAC tournament on Friday, May 7, Montreat defeated Virginia Intermont College 6-5 to earn a date on Saturday with regular season champion and tournament number one seed Tennessee Wesleyan College.

In the Saturday contest, Tennessee Wesleyan showed some of their mettle as they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning.  But Montreat Head Coach Mike Bender saw his troops rally, somewhat improbably, scoring 4 runs of their own in the top of the 5th inning and eventually knotting the score at 9-9 after their half of the 8th, helped in part by five Bulldog errors.  Montreat Centerfielder Martin Lucas and Second Baseman Chris Allen each totaled 2 RBI to lead the Cavaliers' offense.

But Tennessee Wesleyan rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th and held on for a wild 12-9 win.

Dropped into the loser's bracket and facing elimination with its next loss, Montreat was matched on Monday against Reinhardt College, a team which had defeated the Cavaliers in both their games this season and shut out Montreat in both contests.  The Eagles scored two runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings and rode strong pitching from starter Matt Dalton to the 5-2 win that eliminated the Cavaliers from the tournament.

The Cavaliers completed the 2010 season with an overall record of 17-32 after allowing an average of more than six runs per game; a strong offense couldn't overcome the defensive lapses and game but undermanned pitching staff which allowed more than ten runs on twelve occasions.

Head Baseball Coach Mike Bender is proud to announce the signing of Benjamin Woodbury to the Montreat College Baseball team.  Woodbury, a senior catcher from Liberty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the son of Greg Woodbury, an Air Force Chaplain, and Kathy Woodbury.

Woodbury is currently enjoying a strong senior campaign, hitting .385 with a 4 home runs and 17 RBI for the Lancers.  Bender is excited about both the quality of the young man and the player he has found in Woodbury: "Ben is going to contribute right away, as a player and as an outstanding citizen. He is a Christian student-athlete in every sense of the term."

Woodbury felt certain that Montreat College was ideal for him: "God has called me to Montreat so I can grow in my walk and to challenge me athletically and academically."

Former professional pitcher Byron Embry, a friend of the Woodbury family, salutes Woodbury's intangibles as an asset from which the Cavaliers will benefit.  "As a professional pitcher I can honestly say that Woodbury is the type of leader that I want behind the plate.  Coach Bender shows real leadership and character and that will serve Ben well."
