MONTREAT, NC - After suffering a tough road loss to St. Andrews earlier in the week, the Montreat College men's basketball team got back to their winning ways, defeating Tennessee-Wesleyan 104-88 in a showdown of top-4 teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
The Cavaliers (15-4, 8-4 AAC) got a basket from David Everage (JR/Las Vegas, NV) just ten seconds into the game and they would never trail as they improved to 10-1 at McAlister Gymnasium this season. After two Bulldog free throws cut the Montreat lead to 13-12, the Cavaliers responded with a 9-0 run to push their lead to double-digits. The teams continued to go back-and-forth from there with Montreat taking a 52-44 lead into halftime.
In the second half, back-to-back baskets by Alonzo Mobley (SO/Lincolnton, NC) got the lead back to double-digits for Montreat at the 12:21 mark and they would hold that lead until a quick burst from Tennessee-Wesleyan cut the Montreat lead to 84-79 with 5:57 to play. The Cavaliers responded with a 11-2 run capped by a basket from Terrell Sheffey (FR/Yorktown, VA) to put the game out of reach.
The Cavaliers shot 55% (35-63) from the field and benefited from a balanced offensive attack that saw six players reach double-figure scoring. Alonzo Mobley led the team with 21 points and added eight rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots. Jeron Hemphill (SO/Morganton, NC) continued his stellar play off of the bench, scoring 17 points while David Everage added 16 points. The Cavaliers got 13 points from D.J. Caldwell (SO/Charlotte, NC) and the duo of Terrell Sheffey and Zachary Davis (JR/Charlotte, NC) both chipped in 12 points. The Montreat defense held the Bulldogs to 38% shooting while forcing 20 turnovers.
With the win, the Cavaliers claim sole possession of third place in the AAC standings and they are tied for second in the loss column with Reinhardt. Montreat will be back in action on Monday, January 23rd when they host Bryan College at 7:30pm
POWELL, TN - The Montreat College men's basketball team picked up their fourth consecutive win on Monday night, defeating The Crown College 90-52 in their final non-conference match-up of the season.
The Cavaliers (14-3, 7-3 AAC) opened up a big lead in the first half and led 41-17 at halftime. In the second half, the Montreat reserves saw extensive playing time and continued to be effective offensively, scoring 49 points in the half to put the game out of reach.
Montreat relied on a balanced effort as no one played more than 19 minutes and 15 players reached the scoring column. Terrell Sheffey (FR/Yorktown, VA) led the team with 13 points while Austin Butler (FR/Morganton, NC) added 10 points. Isaiah Williams (FR/Morganton, NC) led the team with seven rebounds and chipped in seven points. The team shot 48% (34-71) from the field and connected on 40% (11-27) of their three-point attempts. The team held a 44-24 rebounding advantage while forcing Crown into 18 turnovers.
The team will be back in action on Wednesday, January 18th when they travel to take on St. Andrews in an Appalachian Athletic Conference showdown. Tipoff in Laurinburg is set for 7:30pm.
MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College men's basketball team pushed their winning streak to three games and avenged an early-season loss as they defeated Allen University 94-90 on Saturday night in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
The Cavaliers (13-3, 7-3 AAC) fell behind the Yellow Jackets 8-2 early in the contest but soon made up the difference while using a 14-3 run to take a 40-27 lead with 6:20 to go in the first half. Allen would respond and cut the lead to 44-43 late in the frame but two baskets by Jeron Hemphill (SO/Morganton, NC) gave Montreat a 48-43 lead at halftime.
In the second half, both teams played at a high level and the result was a frame that included seven ties and ten lead changes. With 8:06 to play, Sean Doman (JR/Queens, NY) found Alonzo Mobley (SO/Lincolnton, NC) for a score that broke a tie and put the Cavaliers on top 77-75. While Allen would continue to push, they would get no closer than one point the rest of the way, as D.J. Caldwell (SO/Charlotte, NC) hit four free throws late to ice the win for Montreat.
Alonzo Mobley led all players with 21 points on 8-12 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. David Caldwell scored 17 points in 18 minutes of game action while Jeron Hemphill picked up his second consecutive double-double, collecting 15 points and 10 rebounds. David Everage (JR/Las Vegas, NV) scored 13 points and added six rebounds while Zach Davis scored ten points.
Montreat showed off their offensive efficiency, shooting 58% (34-59) from the floor, including 9-16 from the three-point line. The team dished out 17 assists while forcing Allen into 20 turnovers.
The Cavaliers will be back in action on Monday, January 16th when they travel to Crown College in their final non-conference matchup. Tipoff at McAlister Gymnasium is set for 6pm.
