The 2008 Lady Cavalier Women's Soccer program is one of renewing. After losing three tremendous players, Amanda Solesbee, Brittnye Scott and Shannon Olson, the squad looks to find an offensive punch to match it.
The current core of upper classmen is led by captains Heather Hable (Sr.) and Rebekah Worley (So.) Joining them are Bethany Carmichael, Liz Hamilton, Katie Kovarik, Leah Mummert, Stephanie Sabin, Kaitlyn Thacker and Lucy White.
A talented freshman class coming in will have to step up for our season to be successful. The freshmen are led by defenders Haley Eddy and Katie McGary, strikers Stephanie Liles, Sara Lima, Alex Mash and Brittany Zachrich, and mid-fielder Emily Myers. Freshman Sarah McGuirt will be between the pipes.
"This team is young with two seniors, five juniors, two sophomores and eight freshmen," replied first-year Montreat coach Don Maples. "It's going to be a huge transition for them as they are called to step in and play immediately. We have good leadership, the team is very close and they play for each other. It makes it easier to give your all when you know your teammate is there to back you up leaving it all on the field as well. When we had our team meetings they said across the board we want to be pushed, we want to be challenged! In order for the team to go as far as they want, then an adjustment in what I call their "culture" is going to have happen: a smarter, more soccer sophisticated, more physical, aggressive mentality and one which trains like it wants to play. If you make training tougher than the games; the games become easier."
All in all if the pieces fall into place the Lady Cavalier Women's Soccer team should be able to build on their past '07 season. It is not where you start, it is where you finish.
