The 2008-09 season looks to be a promising one for the Montreat Cavaliers. After completing a nine game turnaround during the 2007-08 and winning a first round AAC Conference Tournament game, the Cavaliers are ready to get rolling toward the future.
The Cavaliers return all 5 starters from the 2007-08 team, along with all eight letter winners. The returning starters include Senior Chazaree Wright, a 1st Team All- AAC selection, sophomore Kim Staley, a member of the All- Freshman and All- Defensive Team, junior Janel Cox, who was 3rd in the country in free throw percentage and 4th in assists, senior Whitney Mace, who led the AAC in 3pt field goals, and junior Whitney Boone, the teams' third leading score at just over 11 points per game.
The Cavaliers also boast a large and talented group of new-comers, with nine new players coming into the fold. The group is led by post players Alicia Wallace (North Surrey HS), Katie Watkins (Wesleyan Christian HS), and Anjelica Jackson (Wilkes Community College). Also joining the Cavaliers are perimeter players Caitlin DeBoer, (Wesley Chapel HS), Lindsay Mizok (Weddington HS), Meredith Florence (Piedmont HS), Caitlyn Chambers (Greenville Tech Charter HS), Samantha Locke (St. Stephens HS), and Devita Mansell (St. Joesph's Academy).
With a strong core of eight experienced returnees, and nine incoming players, the Cavaliers look to use their experience and depth to get them through what is a very tough preseason schedule. The Cavaliers' schedule includes five games against NCAA Div. 1 opponents and two against NCAA Div. 2 foes.
Coach Jackson on this years' Cavalier Team:
"I am very excited to see what this team looks like at conference tournament time. I believe that we have the schedule and the talent to be poised for a deep run in the tournament. We have a lot of expectation and a lot of hard work ahead, but I like the product we can put on the floor."
The inaugural Junior varsity season looks to be a very exciting one for the Montreat Cavaliers. With a very competitive, seven game schedule, against some great competition, the players should gain valuable experience to help shape their future in the program. Montreat plays junior college powerhouses Spartanburg Methodist College and Walters State, along with games against King College, and Caldwell Community College. The Cavaliers are very excited to have the ability to start a junior varsity program and are looking forward to gaining everything that this program will provide.
