Coach Will McMinn comes to Montreat College after playing and coaching lacrosse in California for over 30 years.   His introduction to the game was at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, where he played on the inaugural team, and was named captain his senior year.  He played collegiate ball at UC Santa Barbara, where he played on two WCLL Championship teams as a face-off specialist and defensive midfielder.  After college, Coach McMinn played post-collegiate club lacrosse for close to 25 years, earning several appearances as a Southern Cal Club All-Star in the California Lacrosse Association North-South All-Star Game.

Coach McMinn started his coaching career in 1988, as co-founder of youth and high school lacrosse in Orange County, CA.   While coaching at the high school and youth level, Will served as president of the Orange County Chapter of US Lacrosse for several terms, Vice President for several terms, and Coaches’ Training Coordinator for many years. He was named US Lacrosse Man of the Year in LA/Orange County, US Lacrosse HS Coach of the Year for the Greater Los Angeles Chapter, OCLA HS Coach of the Year, and was inducted into the Greater LA Chapter Hall of Fame in 2005.

Coach McMinn’s first collegiate assignment was as the Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach of Concordia University in Irvine, California.  The trajectory of Concordia’s team was reminiscent of the prior teams Coach McMinn built at the youth and high school level—numbering close to a dozen.  The fledgling program went 1-8 its first season in spring of 2009, garnering a #93 national ranking. After a steady climb in the national rankings that started with a 10-4 record year 2, the program finished its fifth year, Coach McMinn’s final year at Concordia, with a national ranking of #5, its fourth consecutive trip to the SLC tournament (its last trip culminating in an SLC D2 championship), and its second trip in a row to the MCLA National Championship Tournament.   Concordia’s first team garnered one 2nd team all conference selection in 2009.  After the 2013 season, the Eagles had 13 All Conference Selections (including the SLC Offensive Player of the Year), Four MCLA All-Americans,  and two Academic All-Americans.  While at Concordia, Will was named SLC D2 Coach of the Year twice (2010 and 2012), and was named MCLA National Co-Coach of the Year in 2012.

Coach McMinn was brought to Montreat in January 2014 to help the college build its first men’s and women’s lacrosse programs.  His primary mission as a lacrosse coach is to help student-athletes find their missions in life, and help them develop both their character and capacity as leaders and positive influencers of society.

Coach McMinn has taken up residence in Black Mountain with his wife, Christine.  They have four sons and a daughter.  Daughter Kylie transferred to Montreat this fall from the University of Arizona to complete a double major in Outdoor Education and Bible.
