Justin Herbert begins his second year as the head cross
country and track coach at Montreat College, and will head the program for the first time this fall. Herbert took over as the head coach in January and worked diligently to grow the size and quality of the program. "I'm excited about our team this year. We have a great number of returners and recruits this fall and I believe this could be the strongest overall team that Montreat has had since the school reinstated the XC program," says Coach Herbert.
Herbert, a 2008 graduate of Cedarville University in Cedarville, OH, has a passion for working with Christ-focused athletes and is striving to bring his passion and commitment to the Cavalier program. Herbert is a USATF Level II certified coach in the distance events and will work with Montreat athletes competing in XC and track events ranging from the 800 meters to the marathon.
Before joining the Cavaliers, Herbert served as the cross country/assistant track coach at Central Methodist University.
As an athlete, Herbert was an eight-time NAIA national
qualifier for the Cedarville Yellow Jackets and served as team captain during
his junior and senior seasons. In XC, Herbert capped off his career with a 55th
place finish at NAIA nationals in Kenosha, Wisconsin, finishing in a time of
25:39. On the track, Herbert excelled in the marathon. In 2007, he finished
10th at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the marathon,
finishing in 2 hours, 30 minutes, 52 seconds. Also in his time a Cedarville,
Herbert qualified for the 2007 USA 10-Mile Championships where he finished 40th
overall.
Herbert received his bachelor's degree from Cedarville in
education with an emphasis in history and math as well as a minor in Bible. Herbert has also completed his MA in
Educational Leadership and is looking forward to more success with the Cavalier
program.
