The Montreat College Volleyball program is proud to announce the signing of Sara Roth for 2012. Roth, a 5'4" setter from Findlay, Ohio will join the Cavaliers in the fall.
Roth is the daughter of Trace and Lana Roth and has three older siblings, Brittany, Lauren and Drew. If athletic and academic talents are genetic, Sara's future looks promising. Her sister Brittany graduated from Bluffton University in 2009 where she helped the program to an 8-0 HCAC record. Brittany's name is in the BU record books for numerous things, including ranking first in career digs. Sara's other sister Lauren is a senior setter at Caldwell College. Lauren is the program's all-time leader in assists and was recently named Caldwell College's recipient of the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Woman of the Year Award. Both sisters have earned numerous academic awards along with their stellar athletic careers. Drew, a sophomore at Calvin College is studying Biochemistry.
Sara, the youngest Roth, who started playing volleyball in fifth grade, just finished her high school career at Van Buren under head coach Mark Bunn. Roth holds a 3.6 GPA and was named to the District Eight All-Star Team, Blanchard Valley Conference All-Star Team, Blanchard Valley Conference Academic Team, and All-Blanchard Valley Conference Third Team. Her sophomore year, Van Buren High School won their conference for the first time since 1973, a significant accomplishment during Roth's career. Sara grew up playing other sports as well, including soccer, basketball and softball, but in seventh grade decided to focus on volleyball year round. She has played club for 8 years and most recently played for Premier Volleyball Club.
"I am SO excited to be a part of the volleyball family at Montreat!" exclaimed Sara. "I am excited to share a part of my life that I will remember with a group of girls that are great. I can't wait to play and have fun at Montreat." Outside of athletics, Sara noted, "I am looking forward to all the experiences that I am going to have at Montreat. Also, (I'm excited about) the relationships that I hope to form and growing of my faith as well."
Mooberry said of Roth, "She's just a great all around person. She has a great family. This is absolutely a story of God's work in recruiting. (Assistant Coach) Mattera noticed her at a camp because of her talent and then as we got to talk with her, she ended up being such a perfect fit for Montreat. She and her family have huge hearts for others and for the Lord; they are active in missions, foster care and their local church. I couldn't be more excited to have them all as part of our Montreat family."
Roth noted that she chose Montreat because she feels at home on the campus and that, "I think God has a lot of plans for me at Montreat and I am ready to start working on His plans." While Roth is currently undecided on a major, she does know that she has a strong desire to help kids in need and whose voices often go unheard.
