The Cavalier Cross Country team trekked up to Louisville, KY on Friday to compete in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday morning. One of the biggest meets in the country, the event had over 100 teams represented and a large number of unattached athletes as well, ensuring that each of the three races were competitive. Competing the collegiate silver division, the Cavaliers ran well and the top-25 all-time Montreat XC performances on the men's and women's sides will have to be altered again.
Freshman Andy Roof was the first Cavalier across the line for the men's team, finishing the 8,000-meter competition in a time of 26:55. Roof, whose previous best time was 27:18, was the second Cavalier this season to break the 27:00 minute barrier and it propelled him to a 35th place overall finish, and 26th overall collegiately. Next up for the Cavaliers was Sophomore Hunter Howe, running his first race of the season, finishing in a personal best time of 28:05. Senior Jared Nielsen crossed the line next at 28:23, while Sophomore Duncan Reuning completed the 8,000-meter course in 29:54. Noah Hall (30:53) and Spencer Clark (32:24) rounded out the competitors on the men's side. "Overall we had some good performances today," said Coach Herbert. "We still haven't been able to run our top-5 together, and I think once we get (Freshman Joel) Gibbs back, we're going to surprise some people with how fast we end up running. Right now we have two athletes that have run under 27 minutes, and two that I think could run sub-28 as well, so it will be interesting to see what happens as the season continues."
On the women's side, Senior Lindsay Mizok led the Cavaliers once again. Mizok completed the collegiate silver women's 5,000-meter competition in a time of 19:38, good enough for 13th overall and marking the 8th best 5,000-meter cross country performance in Montreat history giving her 4 of the top 10 Cavalier marks. "Solid performance for Lindsay today," remarked Coach Herbert, "and I think that once we start to back off a little, we're going to see Linsday run some even faster times. The school record is 18:51 I think, and I'm guessing that Lindsay will break that before her time here is up."
The Cavaliers are off this weekend before heading to the Royal XC Challenge at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, NC on the October 14th.
