Montreat College Men's Basketball Head Coach Lincoln Walters announced
on July 2 that point guard Scott McNeil has signed to play for the
Cavaliers in fall 2010. McNeil comes to Montreat from Lincoln Trail
Community College in Robinson, Illinois, where he was the second
leading scorer for the Statesmen, averaging just under 13 points a game
as a freshman and sophomore.Walters expressed great eagerness for McNeil to join the Cavaliers program: "Scott is an extremely talented player who can take over a game offensively. His exceptional ball-handling skills will help us against teams that pressure the ball well. Scott's ability to handle, distribute, and score the ball will make him one of the better point guards in our league."
In fact, McNeil was runner-up for the "Freshman of the Year" award in the very competitive NJCAA Region 24, one of the toughest junior college leagues in the country.
During his junior year at South Johnston High School in eastern North Carolina, McNeil helped the Trojans to the state final, where they lost to Greensboro Dudley High School. That season, McNeil averaged 17 points per game while he was named to the All-Conference and All-Region teams.
McNeil once converted 12 three-pointers in one game, a school record, on his way to scoring 40 points, and he also participated in the North Carolina East-West game as a senior.
Montreat College is a Christ-centered liberal arts institution with its main campus for four-year traditional students in Montreat. The accelerated School of Professional and Adult Studies program has campuses in Asheville, Charlotte, and Black Mountain.
