Montreat College Athletic Director Jonathan Bennett announced on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 that Lincoln Walters has been named the new head coach of the men's basketball program.  Walters becomes only the fourth head coach to guide the Cavaliers since they joined the NAIA in 1992 as he replaces Bennett, who led a team that struggled through injuries and offensive woes during the 2009 season.

Bennett will remain Athletic Director and mentor Walters, who spent two seasons as Assistant Coach for men's basketball at Montreat after serving for three years as Headmaster at Marion Christian Academy in Marion, N.C.

Despite a continuing love for coaching, Bennett is excited to concentrate on his duties as A.D. and allow Walters to flourish as the leader of the basketball program.  "Lincoln will do a fantastic job building young men and living out the Gospel in front of them.  He has great experience as a player, a recruiter and a coach, and I am eager to watch him grow as he shapes this program for years to come."

Walters' experience on the court includes starting as a freshman point guard for a 1994-95 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga squad that played Michigan and Ohio State among other opponents.  Before graduating from UTC with a B.S. in Sports Administration in 1999, Walters helped lead the Moccasins to upset wins over the much more highly-seeded Georgia Bulldogs and Illinois Fighting Illini during the 1997 NCAA Tournament.

Expressing excitement about the new position, Walters looked ahead to bright days for the Cavalier program.  "I'm honored to have the chance to lead these young men.  They are hungry for the game and determined to be better men and better basketball players.  It's a privilege to be asked to hold them to these high standards and help them all realize their great potential."
