Cavaliers look ahead to games with Bryan College
A weekend series against conference rival Covenant College began well on Friday, April 9 as the Cavaliers defeated the Scots 8-6 in game one behind several key hits and scrambling pitching, but Covenant rebounded to sweep a Saturday doubleheader in convincing fashion on Montreat's home field. A subsequent mid-week loss in Greensboro, NC to Guilford University left the Cavaliers 1-3 on the week as they prepare to host Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Bryan College for three games this weekend.
The victory over Covenant was powered by a trio of dynamic offensive contributions: Geno Sanchez collected 3 hits and 2 RBI and stole 5 bases, Jordan Sells had 2 hits including a double, and Cam Duckworth cracked his 9th home run of the season. Jonathan Madera battled for 6 innings on the mound and kept Montreat in the game before Brian Greene relieved him, pitching the final three innings and getting the win.
Head Coach Mike Bender said he was pleased to see "Sanchez and [Lucas] Martin put pressure on Covenant by being so aggressive on the base paths." The win raised Montreat's record to 3-11 in the AAC and 12-20 overall.
The Saturday twinbill resulted in losses by the scores of 9-2 and 14-2 in a game that was called after five innings. Bender said that pitchers who have kept the Cavs close all season suffered from overwork and "hit a wall" against the Scots. Steven Hoyle and TJ Fussell took the losses, but Bender commended his team for continuing to battle.
A Tuesday trip to Greensboro to face Guilford University saw the return of the offense, but the Quakers outscored Montreat in an 11-8 win over the Cavaliers. Dustin Bartlett was 4-5 with an RBI double, Martin was 3-3 with a walk and 3 runs scored, and Sanchez and Adam Speas each drove in two runs. But Guilford's fast start - a grand slam in the first and a three-run homer in the second staked them to a 7-2 lead after two innings - was too much for the visitors to overcome as David Flanagan took the loss.
Montreat next takes its 3-13 and 12-23 record onto the diamond for an important weekend series against Bryan College; the Lions bring a 9-9 AAC record and 18-25 overall mark to Montreat for one game Friday starting at 2:30 and a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1:00.
