Montreat College's women's golf team claimed the slimmest of leads in a three-team battle to win the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season championship during play on Monday, April 12.  Competing at the Wasioto Winds State Park Golf Course in Pineville, Kentucky, the Cavaliers carved out a one-stroke lead as they begin play in the final round of the tournament on Tuesday, April 13.

The format for the AAC regular season title carries over scores from last fall's play, during which Union College led with a team score of 539, with Montreat two strokes back at 541 and Tennessee Wesleyan in third at 544.  On Monday, Tennessee Wesleyan posted a 350 score, Montreat shot 352, and Union recorded a 358.

Therefore, with one round remaining, the three teams' cumulative totals are Montreat 893, Tennessee Wesleyan 894, and Union 897.  Yes, that's three teams separated by four shots.

Montreat's head gold coach David Pennell shook his head at the close scores: "The final round is going to be exciting and down to the wire."

Pennell also noted that the score of 352 was one shot away from tying the school record for lowest team round shot in tournament play, so he was thrilled at the effort the women displayed.

In fact, all five women contributed solid scores en route to claiming the one-stroke advantage.  Sophomore Brittany Zachrich, a dual-sport athlete in golf and soccer, led the Cavs with an 84, followed by teammates Morgan Morrow's 88, Ashley Mitcham and Caitlin Dempsey's 90s, and Aimee Turner's 97.

We wish the women well as they play for a regular season championship in the final round today.
