Cavs win one, lose one, tie one over the weekend
Over the weekend of March 20-21, Montreat College baseball continued to play promising but inconsistent baseball as they split a three-game series against the Bluefield College Rams. Yes, they split three games, which seems to defy the laws of mathematical division. But the Cavaliers finished 1-1-1 as they suffered a close loss, galloped to an overwhelming win, and finished out the weekend with a weather-influenced tie.
In Saturday's game one, Geno Sanchez and Steven Hoyle both contributed to the Cavalier's performance with 1 RBI each. But the tight 5-4 loss to the Bluefield Rams left Montreat head coach Mike Bender ruing the team's 4th loss by that exact score this season as his squad fell to 8-13 overall and 1-6 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
In a drastic change of pace, Montreat claimed an impressive 11-1 win over Bluefield in the second game of the doubleheader. With five total home runs, the contest was called after the 6th inning due to the ten-run lead held by the home team. Senior Cam Duckworth drove in 4 with 3 home runs, breaking the Montreat College Career Home Run record with his 37th, 38th, and 39th career round-trippers. Junior Chris Allen also excelled as he contributed a homer and 3 RBI. Senior Josh Ashton also blasted a home run, and junior Seth Blevins pitched 6 innings and notched 5 strikeouts for the win. The Cavaliers improved to 2-6 in the conference and 9-13 overall and handed the Bluefield Rams their first AAC loss of the year.
Hoping to turn the tables in his favor once again, Bluefield coach Mike White sent his team out for the series finale on Sunday afternoon, March 21. But try as they might, the Rams couldn't break through the Cavaliers' defense. Montreat held their ground, thanks to freshman TJ Fussell who pitched 5 sharp innings and collected 6 strikeouts. After the 5th inning, the game was called 0-0 due to rain, resulting in the first tie of the season for the Cavaliers.
The March 27 home doubleheader pitting Montreat against Tennessee Wesleyan was a dismal day for the Cavaliers. The Bulldogs romped to an 11-5 win in the opener under heavy rain, and the home spirits were further dampened in a 3-0 shutout loss. The March 28 series capper was cancelled due to rain and field conditions.
Montreat next takes its 9-15-1 record onto the diamond for two games on Tuesday, March 30 against the visiting Atlanta Christian Chargers.
