Cavaliers sweep Bryan College
Head Coach Craig Jackson noted that Montreat's milestone victory over Bryan College on Saturday, February 13 has positioned his Cavaliers' team for a milestone season. The hard-fought 50-48 away victory in Dayton, Tennessee gave Montreat a season sweep of the Lions, and Jackson said that "this was the first time Montreat has swept Bryan" in recent years.
Further, that noteworthy result, which Jackson called the team's "best road victory of the season," has positioned the Cavaliers to reach the 20-win plateau during the regular season as they raised their record to 19-8 and 7-7 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Chaecie Bullock continued her outstanding run of play of late as she led Montreat with 14 points and also nabbed 3 steals, including making the key play of the game when she converted a late steal into a lay-up and a clinching free throw. Whitney Boone added 10 points and 5 rebounds in a low-scoring defensive struggle. Amber Smith led the Lions and was the contest's high scorer with 17.
Jackson was especially proud of Montreat's defense, remarking that Bryan made only 13 field goals all game and only 22 in two losses to the Cavaliers this season.
Winning the second of the two regular season meetings with Bryan positioned Montreat exactly in the middle of the AAC standings - an appropriate placement considering their .500 mark in league play. After a non-conference game on February 15, the Cavaliers complete their schedule of games with AAC encounters against Union College, who defeated them 62-61 on January 16, and against Virginia Intermont, whom the Cavs beat by 15 on the road in January. So the Cavaliers will enter the AAC tournament as a middle seed, but almost assuredly as a 20-win team as well.
Considering the fact that the Cavaliers finished last season at 9-22, reaching the mythical 20-win mark will be a great reward, even before the Cavaliers set their sights on an AAC tournament run.
Montreat faces non-conference opponent Bennett College in Greensboro on Monday night, February 15. The Cavs downed the Belles 58-50 on February 10.
