Mueller gathers with her parents and new team mates at Montreat to sign
Montreat College Volleyball head coach Christine Mooberry this week announced that Lutheran High School South senior standout Melissa Mueller has signed to play volleyball for the Cavaliers starting as a freshman in autumn 2010. For her part, Mueller declared that she is eager to attend Montreat and "grow as a volleyball player, as a student, and, most importantly, as a child of God."
The daughter of Michelle and David Mueller of Arnold, Missouri, Mueller will join a promising
Montreat Cavalier program which set a record during the 2009 season for total match wins with a very young team. Mueller has played volleyball since she was ten years old and boasts a career that culminated with her selection to 1st Team All Conference and 1st Team All District teams during her time playing for coach Carol Reinitz at Lutheran. A well-rounded athlete, Mueller also competed for the Lancer track and basketball teams.
Mooberry recognizes Mueller's accomplishments and strengths and believes the incoming freshman can add depth to the Cavaliers: "Melissa played for and now helps coach Team Elite St. Louis Volleyball Club, a very strong club in the St. Louis area. Some freshmen come in nervous and hesitant, which can be a huge detriment, especially in the setter role. Melissa doesn't show signs of that. She's confident, she knows what she needs to do, and she's competitive and encouraging to her teammates. I think having coached a team as well has given her perspective and maturity and a willingness to be coached."
Looking ahead, Mooberry sees Mueller joining a solid corps of setters: "We will have three very solid setters next season. The competition among these three great and very skilled girls will only enhance their performance."
As one factor in choosing to attend Montreat College, Mueller cited the "closeness of everyone on the team." Montreat's elementary education program appeals to Mueller as she aspires to teach grades 2-4 after graduation.
Mooberry anticipates a very strong squad in 2010 after her team set a school record for most victories in a season, finished with a 27-19 win-loss mark, and lost only one player to graduation.
