Boone lead Cavs in scoring in last night's game

During the first game of this 2009-2010 women's basketball season, senior forward Whitney Boone reached a personal milestone when she scored her 1000th point as a Montreat Cavalier.  In that same game, way back in October, she scored a career-high 27 points.

But surely, much more than individual achievements, the senior from Bakersville cherishes the winning record that she and her teammates have built this season, a mark that was raised to 18-8 with a 58-50 victory over Bennett College on Wednesday night, February 10 in McAlister Gymnasium.

Boone made a significant contribution to the win over the Belles as she was the game's leading scorer, with 17.  Anjelica Jackson fought for 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Janay Walker led Bennett with 15 points in a losing but battling effort.

Head Coach Craig Jackson appreciated the win but was not carried away with his team's performance.  "We did not play well; we led the game by as much as 11 but could never put it out of reach."

Jackson's concern is that the Cavaliers sharpen their game as they face conference rivals in three of the final four regular season contests and prepare for the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament in late February.  "Hopefully," he added, "we will prepare and focus better for our league game at Bryan on Saturday."

That game sees the Cavaliers traveling to Dayton, Tennessee to face a team whose record parallels Jackson's squad's.  Whereas Montreat is 6-7 (in AAC play) and 18-8 overall, the Lions are 6-6 in conference games and 16-9 overall.  Bryan will hope to avenge an earlier defeat to the Cavaliers, who defeated the Lions 49-46 in McAlister on January 13.
