2009-2010 Cavaliers
It's probably safe to say that the women's basketball team from Truett-McConnell College is happy to have their games against Montreat College behind them for the season. On October 31, 2009, Montreat's Cavaliers earned their first victory of the current season by defeating the Bears by 41 points. On January 5, 2010, Montreat raised its record to 11-3 when they traveled to Georgia and downed Truett-McConnell 72-46.
Head Coach Craig Jackson, predictably, saw some rust on his players as they ended a more than three-week layoff between games, though he thought the Cavaliers played well in stretches. Whitney Boone led Montreat in scoring with 15 while Chaecie Bullock connected on four three-pointers and tallied 13. Kera Bryant added 12 and Titi Takai also reached double figures with 10.
Less than a day later, Jackson's squad had made the drive from Cleveland, Georgia to the campus of Reinhardt College in Waleska, Georgia to face the Eagles in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up. Reinhardt won the AAC showdown in overtime, earning a 72-66 win after the Cavaliers missed an open three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to set up the extra period.
Boone again led Montreat as she scored 26 and added 5 assists. Bullock scored 13 and Alicia Wallace scored 10 and collected 7 rebounds. Jackson rued the loss against a team which entered the game with a 6-7 record, saying, "We did not shoot the ball or defend well, but we were still in position to gain a road conference victory."
Conference victories will be available to be claimed in bunches throughout January as the Cavaliers face AAC foes in eight of their next nine games. Following a non-conference contest against Hiwassee College on January 11, jockeying for conference tournament position begins in earnest as Montreat, 2-3 in the AAC, welcomes Bryan College to McAlister Gymnasium on January 13.
