Katie Kipreos poses at her college signing

Montreat College Head Women's Soccer Coach Don Maples has a long way to go to match the strong 2009 freshman class he recruited who are now playing for the Lady Cavaliers' program.  So he was delighted to travel to Stuart, Virginia to sign his first recruit of the class of 2010, Katie Kipreos, a current forward/mid-fielder at Patrick County High School. When asked why she selected Montreat College to further her education and soccer career, Kipreos offered a decisive answer: "I chose Montreat because as soon as I visited the campus, I fell in love.  Montreat is unique and the best place for me to grow in Christ."

Kipreos's accomplishments on the field are many, but Maples seeks to bring in athletes who are complete students and characters as well.  The coach was effusive in assessing the role his first signee of the class of 2010 might play: "Katie brings much needed desire and commitment to our squad.  She is determined to be the best she can be," to the point that "she travels an hour - one way - to work with a trainer in Greensboro (N.C.) so she can stay sharp and continue to improve."  Maples cites her excellence in the classroom - she's an Honors Student with a 4.0 GPA - and the support her family provides as evidence that she will settle in perfectly next season.

That is an enthusiasm which Kipreos shares.  Says the senior, "I plan to bring a positive attitude to the team and look forward to growing as a player and making good friends along the way."

Playing for the Cougars in her fourth varsity high school season for Coach Sandra Rakes at Patrick County, Katie is also a fixture on the GVFC Mystics club team.  Her effort on the field at Patrick County has yielded many rewards: In 2008 and 2009, she was named team MVP and First Team All-District.  Following a strong junior season, she was named Second Team All-State and Piedmont District Player of the Year.

The daughter of Nick and Becky Kipreos, Katie has both an older sister, Markella, and a younger sister, Lauren.

Her favorite passage from the Bible comes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount where, in Matthew 6:25-33, He assures of us God's provision for us and reminds us that we are more important than the lilies of the field and urges us to seek "first the kingdom of God and His righteousness."
