The game of soccer can pit two sides that appear evenly matched against each other and have an outcome that defies the expectations of both coaches and all the players.  Such was the case when, on Wednesday, October 21 a Bryan College team with an undistinguished record of 6-6 hosted a Montreat College team with a record just under .500 but on an October hot streak.  Conversely, Montreat boasted a marginal lead over Bryan in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.  So far, pretty even. And as the Cavaliers put 15 shots on goal compared to the Lions' 13, there again seemed little to separate the two teams.  Unfortunately, Bryan College managed to put four goals past a Montreat defense which had been very stingy of late while only Hasani McKenzie scored for the Cavaliers, on a deflected shot.

Head Coach Brenton Benware has played and coached enough soccer to feel when a match may just not go his team's way.  "This was one of those games when things didn't seem to go our way.  We gave up a penalty kick, we suffered an injury which led to another Bryan goal, and we scored one on fifteen shots and they got four on thirteen shots."  And sometimes, that's just the way a game takes shape.

Still in the upper half of the Appalachian Athletic Conference at 4-2-1 and 5-7-1 overall, Montreat can look for better breaks and a happier outcome when they play at Covenant College on Saturday, October 24 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
