It's a good thing in sports to be hard to beat, and Montreat College's men's soccer team has evolved into a tightly-knit unit that is becoming very hard to beat.  Their resolve was tested on Wednesday, October 14 in a home match at the Black Mountain campus against an aggressive Union College team, but the defense held fast as Howard Fisher earned the plaudits in a 0-0 draw.In recording his 33rd career shutout and 5th of the 2009 season, Fisher, a senior goalkeeper from Kingston, Jamaica, exemplified the resilience that Head Coach Brenton Benware desires from his team.

There will be days when a soccer team, as Benware said,  "just can't seem to finish" in front of goal, and despite a gaping 28-11 advantage in shots, Montreat College couldn't beat Union's fine goalie, Jonathan Shaw.  In one moment which symbolized the course of the match, the Cavaliers carved out a great attack and beat Shaw but couldn't get past the crossbar, which repelled a shot in the waning moments of the game.

On days when not one of 28 shots finds the back of the net, it's very nice to have Howard Fisher manning the last line of defense.   In an unbeaten October, Montreat College has posted a 3-0-1 record, scoring eight goals and allowing only one while collecting four shutouts in its six most recent matches.

The Cavaliers overall record may be a middling 5-6-1, but they sit atop the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 4-1-1 record as the regular season nears completion.  A road win against Bryan College on Wednesday, October 21 would position them as a likely top seed for the coming AAC tournament, which starts on November 7.
