BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC (September 19, 2009) -- Due to an unplayable field, the Montreat College soccer teams moved their conference matches against Tennessee Wesleyan to Owen High School on Saturday afternoon. The Cavs were looking for their first win of the 2009 season.
At the half, both teams remained scoreless, but it was Tennessee Wesleyan's Helen Collins that broke free in the second half to score the Bulldogs two goals for a 2-0 victory over Montreat. Montreat head coach Don Maples remarked that a key factor in the loss was Collins, who Montreat had designated as a player to be aware of, broke free for her two goals.
Maples was pleased with his team reaching some goals. "We had ten shots with six on goal, while
Caroline Mellard and Sarah McGuirt combined for five saves while giving up two goals," stated Maples.
Maples also noted, "It was great to be in front of our crowd even though we moved the game because our field was unplayable. I wanted the team to come out and play some inspired soccer and we talked about that in pre-game. I followed up on some scripture I have been researching since the Liberty exhibition and encouraged the players to come out and play with some Dunamis. That word in the Greek means power and Paul speaks of it as "achieving power that is intrinsic; the ability of carry out some potential in some way be it by power, might; a power residing in you".
"After our game it was noted by the players that we were flat during warm-up so it carried over to the game. Also that we didn't execute the things we should have by virtue of TWC pressure or just not getting our head up and making good sound decisions. I think it was a lot of those issues and we will continue to work on them, find the right on field chemistry as we move forward."
Rebcca Worley, Bethany Carmichael and Caroline Mellard are still nursing injuries.
Montreat drops to 0-2 in the AAC and 0-5-0 for the season. The Cavs will face Columbia College on Tuesday, September 22 in a home contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
