The Lady Cavaliers women's soccer team is still hunting for
their first regular season win, but the play from freshman goalkeeper Caroline
Mellard has been outstanding early in the season. She recorded seven saves
during the team's season opener against Brevard College, and upped the ante
with thirteen saves in their second game against King College. That comes to
twenty brilliant saves and an exceptional 87% save rate on the season, good
enough to rank her 13th in the entire nation for the NAIA (Div I).
A native of Lawrenceville, GA, where she attended Brookwood
High School, Mellard is the daughter of David and Sydney Mellard. She is
currently studying Elementary Education at Montreat College. When asked about
her achievements, Caroline replied, "Any success I have comes straight from the
Lord and the talents he has blessed me with. I couldn't believe I was ranked
nationally. When Coach Maples first told me, I didn't really comprehend the
news." She then went on to say, "The girls give me so much support. It truly is
a team effort, not any one player." Caroline is hopeful about the future,
claiming that she would like to rise in the rankings as the team plays more
games. Without a doubt, all of the Lady Cavaliers' fans are excited to see what
the season has in store next for this talented young player.
