The Cavalier Men's Soccer team needed to win yesterday, after coming off two heartbreaking losses early as the majority of the team's starters were sidelined due to eligibility issues. When the Cavaliers took to the field to take on conference member Virginia Intermont, a win was exactly what they got, even with most of their starters still out of commission. The Cavs came out on top 5-0 in their first conference game of the season.
Highlights for the Cavs included Shaka Bangura's tremendous offensive performance, as he put away three goals and recorded an assist in the contest. Abdul Bangura added a goal himself, along with three assists. Stephen Jackson had two assists on the day, and Leonard Walker also scored.
Coach Benware says,"We really needed a win right now, as we continue to wait for
eligibility clearance for five key starters. This was an opportunity for some of our young players to shine.
Additionally, this was a big win for us, as it is the first AAC men's soccer match
of the year. The win puts us at
the top of our conference standings."
Shaka Bangura agrees, "It was a big win for us
without key players in our line-up, and this proved to us that we can
compete. This helped us find
ourselves and it helps us send out a statement that we're better than our
previous results. We needed this
win as we go into our game against University of the Cumberlands. We're going to continue to improve and
things will get better."
The Cavs (1-2-0) will take on the University of the Cumberlands on their home turf next Wednesday, September 9th.
