HARRISON BAY, TN (April 28, 2009) -- How does one define success? What defines a Champion of Character? On Monday evening after two rounds of golf, junior Cory Howard was one shot back from the leader. However, later that evening, Cory believed he had made a mistake on his scorecard during the second round on Monday. After looking over the card with Head Coach David Pennell, they both found were Cory had committed an infraction and signed for a score lower than what he actually shot, thus disqualifiying him for the second round. Coach Pennell then phoned the tournament chair and reported the error.
No one will every know if that infraction did indeed cost Cory a shot at the National Tournament, but what is more important is the decision he made based on integrity and honest to report the mistake.
On Tuesday, Cory shot a 78. If the infraction had not occurred, Cory would have finished in second place for the tournament scoring a 75 and 78.
