MONTREAT, NC (April 23, 2009) -- Thursday's doubleheader marked the last regular season games for the Montreat College softball team.  The Cavs hosted Covenant College and in game one the Scots from Covenant showed Montreat they were there to play.  Montreat jumped on the scoreboard early in the third inning, but could not muster out another run.  Great defense and a great pitching from Rachel Stowe, enabled the Cavs to hold off Covenant in a 1-0 decision.  The win marked Stowe's 16th of the season.

The Cavs only had four hits for the game coming from Tameron Sealey, Amy Vogel, Kerby Barkdoll, and Jamie Poling.

In game two, the Cavs played excellent softball, especially play from their seniors.  Meredith Mitchell picked up the win in the 9-1 victory over Covenant.  Mitchell pitched five innings only allowing one run off of one hit and striking out six batters.

Seniors Mandi Pike and Amber Summerow hit home runs of their own in their last home game of their softball career. Montreat held an 8-0 advantage going into the fifth, but Covenant was able to squeeze in a run forcing the Cavs to bat in the bottom of the fifth.  Erin Cross was the first Cavalier batter in the fifth and answered the call with a solo shot to centerfield.  The homerun marked Cross' second for the week.

The sweep gives Montreat an 11-5 AAC record and a 22-20 record for the 2009 regular season.  Montreat will be off until Tuesday, April 28 when the team travels to Kingsport, TN for the AAC Softball Tournament.
