CENTRAL, SC – The Montreat College track & field teams traveled to South Carolina on Saturday to take part in the Susan Rouse Invitational, hosted by Southern Wesleyan University. In their final tune-up before hosting the Appalachian Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in two weeks, the Cavaliers came through with some excellent results.
Marcus Medina-Artis (FR/Kenly, NC) had a standout day for Montreat, claiming victory in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 49.30. That effort has him ranked in the top-40 nationally after the weekend. Medina-Artis would return later in the meet to earn a 9th place finish in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 22.73 seconds. Elijah Mitchell (SO/Milledgeville, GA) fared even better in the 200 meters, placing 6th overall with a school-record time of 22.46 seconds. Mitchell also placed 10th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.48 seconds. Connor Duncan (FR/Lawrenceburg, KY) placed 4th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.66 seconds.
The tandem or Daniel Lancaster (JR/Jacksonville, NC) and Jeb Phillips (FR/Mooresville, NC) made some noise in the 800 meter race. Lancaster placed 4th with a time of 1:59.23 while Phillips was 6th in 2:00.93. Both efforts were personal best times for the mid-distance duo. Brien Lancaster (JR/Jacksonville, NC) led a host of Cavaliers in the 5,000 meters, taking 3rd place with a personal best time of 15:43.20. Ryan Hincher placed 10th in 16:37.59 while Brandon Welborn (JR/Traphill, NC) (16:39.29) and Frank Bartholow (FR/Lexington, NC) (16:59.74) also broke the 17-minute barrier. Chase Blackwell (FR/Linden, NC) had a big breakthrough, taking over half a minute off of his personal best time, finishing in 17:23.54. Jacob Parker (FR/Elkin, NC) came through with a 12th place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:21.27.
On the women's side, Alona Kosenko (JR/Charlotte, NC) had a solid day, setting huge personal bests in both the 1500 meters (5:17.75) and the 800 meters (2:41.54). Isabel Salinas (FR/Resaca, GA) earned a time of 2:30.12 in the 800 meters while Katie Colenda (FR/Grimesland, NC) placed 6th in her 400 meter hurdles debut, finishing with a time of 1:13.61. Samantha Gaskill (SR/Wilmington, NC) raced to a personal best time of 20:49.84 in the 5,000 meters while Kelly Norton (FR/Murray, KY) finished the race in 21:16.42.
Overall, the Cavaliers finished the day with fourteen top-10 finishes and 17 personal best efforts. The team will take next weekend off before welcoming their conference rivals to Pulliam Stadium for the AAC Championships April 21-22.
