CHARLOTTE, NC - The Montreat College track & field team cut short their spring break to open up the outdoor season at the UNC-Charlotte 49er Invitational over the weekend. Despite not practicing together during the shortened break, the team came together to come up with some solid performances in a meet that featured nearly 60 colleges from across all divisions.
On the women's side, Nyaisha Burrell (FR/Richmond Hill, GA) led the way, kicking off Friday with a school record performance in the 100m dash (13.31). Burrell would return later Friday to run the 200m in 28.13, just breaking the former school record set by Charnay Ryland in 2014. Madeline Sides (FR/Denver, NC) led a trio of women in the 1500m as she finished with a time of 5:20.68. Isabel Salinas (FR/Resaca, GA) crossed the line in 5:22.05 while Alona Kosenko (JR/Charlotte, NC) raced to a time of 5:37.17. Kosenko would return to action on Saturday, setting a new personal best with a school-record time of 12:10.61 in the 3,000m. MiKayla Poulter (JR/Hickory, NC) competed in the 5k and finished in 21:24.05.
On the men's side, the Cavaliers saw good success in the sprinting events. Elijah Mitchell (SO/Milledgeville, GA) established a new school record in the 100m dash (11.28) while shaving 0.07 seconds off of his record in the 200m with a time of 22.70. Marcus Medina-Artis (FR/Kenly, NC) finished the 400m dash in 50.19 seconds while Mitchell ran 50.95. Medina-Artis also competed in the 200m, breaking the 23-second barrier with a time of 22.99.
Connor Duncan (FR/Lawrenceburg, KY) made his debut in the 400m hurdles on Friday and the freshman made an impact, placing 19th in a stacked field with a time of 56.52. That mark set a new school record in the event. Brien Lancaster (JR/Jacksonville, NC) raced to a time of 2:00.45 in the 800m while Eli Hall (SO/Columbus, NC) shaved nearly three seconds off of his personal best in the event, finishing in 2:02.99.
Rylan Hincher (SO/North Wilkesboro, NC) also had a big personal best, cutting nearly two minutes off his time on the 10,000m, placing 10th overall with a time of 33:04.16. Four Cavaliers competed in the 3,000m Steeplechase with defending AAC champion Holden Dixon (SO/Chocowinity, NC) placing 10th overall with a new personal best time of 10:09.85. That effort broke the school record that Dixon earned last year at the AAC championships.
In the final running event of the weekend, the 4x400m relay team of Medina-Artis, Duncan, Hall, and Mitchell raced to a time of 3:24.25, shaving nearly half a second off of the previous school record set last year.
