ATHENS, TN - The Montreat College baseball team traveled to Athens this week for a conference showdown with Tennessee-Wesleyan. The Cavaliers showed continued improvement but fell short this weekend to #4 Tennessee-Wesleyan. Game one, Montreat showed some creativity scoring in the 1st inning without a hit as Grayson Snipes (SR, Lancaster, SC) reached on an error and then proceeded to steal second. Bradley Oakes (SR, Asheville, NC) got him over with a groundout and Andres Cancio (SR, Orlando, FL) scored him on a groundout to short. The Bulldogs tied the game in their half of the first.
It was 7-4 Tennessee-Wesleyan in the 7th when the Cavaliers showed some life and started their comeback. Cancio started the inning with a single to LF and then Tray Hill (SR, Chickamauga, GA) followed that with a single to RF to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no one out. Ricky DeArmas (JR, Miami, FL) then doubles over the head of the rightfielder to score both runners. After getting to 3B on the throw, Chase Day (SR, Easley, SC) singled to RF to score DeArmas and tie the game.
In the 10th inning the Bulldogs led off the inning with a single to CF by Lang where he was then sacrificed over to 2B. Then after a PH entered the game, the count was 1-1 when he ripped one down the LF line that DeArmas gloved down but the ball trickled into LF to score the winning run.
For the game Andres Cancio was 3-4 with an RBI, Ricky DeArmas was 2-4 with a 2B and 2 RBIs, and Chase Day was 2-4 with a 2B and an RBI. Hard luck pitcher Braedan Daniels (SO, Statesville, NC) got the no decision going 5.2 inn giving up 9 hits and 5 ER while striking out 6. Losing pitcher Cole Yoder was brilliant in relief going 3.2 innings and only giving up 2 hits which came in the last inning while striking out 3.
Game 2 was another close one as Montreat lost 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th. Sophomore pitcher Daniel Collins was strong going 6.2 inn with 5 strikeouts. But he ran out of gas in the 7th and gave way to Mitch Donohue (JR, Lagrange, GA). Donohue struggled and hit a batter to load the bases with one out. The game ended after a walk to the next batter to give Tennesseee the win. For the game Eli Ledford (SR. Asheville, NC) was 2-4 with his team leading 5th HR but the only other offense was provided by Matt Oster (JR. Knoxville, TN) who was 1-3 and tied the game in the top of the 7th with a 2 out single.
Game 3 Montreat, lost 9-0 to fall to 0-3 in conference play. The Cavs could only muster 3 hits in this game and struggled to find the energy they had in the first 2 games. The Cavaliers next play this coming Tuesday in Toccoa Falls as they take on the Eagles at 2pm.
