Game one of the Cavaliers' AAC opener was a battle from the beginning. Montreat scored first after Mikki Shelton walked in the top of the first, stole a base, and advanced home on a passed ball. The Cavaliers would put two more on the board in the top of the 3rd with Aubree Sluder and Shelton scoring after a double to left center by Cailin Warner. The bottom of the 3rd was a little rough on the Cavs as they gave up 6 runs to fall behind 8-3, but answered with two more runs in the top of the 4th after a Karley Yeager single and Sluder double. Both Yeager and Sluder scored on a single to left by Shelton. Both teams were quiet at the plate until the 7th inning when Montreat surged forward with three runs to tie the game when Shelton, Aly Woody, and Amy Hill, pinch running for Warner, all crossed the plate. However, Milligan was able to push a run across in the bottom of the 7th to take the 9-8 win. Shelton went 3-3 with a walk and scored 3 of the Cavaliers' runs in game one.
Montreat once again scored first in the second game with Aly Woody crossing the plate in the top of the 1st inning. The Cavaliers' offense came alive in the top of the 3rd with 6 runs to give the Cavaliers a 7-3 lead. Milligan scored one lone run in the 4th which would prove to be their final run of the game. A Morgan Stapleton 2-run homerun would cap the Cavs scoring for the game and secure the 9-4 win for pitcher Allison Moody. Cailin Warner came on to close the game from the mound and would leave the Buffalos scoreless for the 3 innings she pitched.
Cavaliers' standouts for the doubleheader included: Mikki Shelton, who went 5-7 with 2 walks, a stolen base, and 3 runs. Aubree Sluder and Bree Powell (2) also notched stolen bases on the day with Cailin Warner, Ashlyn Vickers, and Sluder earned a double each, and freshman Morgan Stapleton had a homerun for day.
Your softball Cavs will be back in action on Monday, March 6th, at 2:00 pm for their home opener with Hiawassee College.
