MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College men's basketball team picked up an important victory on Monday night, defeating Bryan College 87-76 on Monday night at McAlister Gymnasium.

The Cavaliers (16-4, 9-4 AAC) got off to a slow start and fell behind 23-11 seven minutes into the first half. The offense for Montreat would get going as an Alonzo Mobley (SO/Lincolnton, NC) basket capped off a 12-2 run that cut the Bryan lead to 30-29 with 6:13 to play in the half. With just over a minute to play in the first frame, Austin Butler (FR/Morganton, NC) nailed a three-pointer and helped Montreat take a 44-42 lead into halftime.

Montreat opened the second half with a 16-4 run to break the game open but the 16 point lead was cut to six after a flurry of Bryan baskets and some untimely turnovers by the Cavaliers. Terrell Sheffey (FR/Yorktown, VA) drilled one of his four three-pointers to pad the lead and strong free-throw shooting helped the Cavaliers seal the victory.

Sheffey had a tremendous game for the Cavaliers, scoring 18 points on 5-6 shooting, including hitting on 4-5 from the three-point line and all four of his free throws. Alonzo Mobley once again filled the stat line with a double/double, scoring 12 points while grabbing 12 rebounds, dishing out six assists, and nabbing three steals. Zachary Davis (JR/Charlotte, NC) scored 13 points while Sean Doman (JR/Queens, NY) added 11 points. The Cavaliers shot 50% (29-58) from the floor and 44% (12-27) from the three-point line. Clutch free-throw shooting was a key component in the win and Montreat shot 85% (17-20) from the charity stripe on the night.

Montreat will be back in action on Wednesday, January 25th when they travel to take on Milligan College in the second of three AAC showdowns this week. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm.
