This weekend the Cavalier distance team traveled to Albany, GA for the SNICKERS MARATHON ENERGY BAR Half Marathon event. The Cavs represented wonderfully on the mildly rolling streets of downtown Albany, on a foggy morning with race temperatures in the high 40's.
The men's
team dominated by taking six out of the top ten spots, sweeping the top three
places out of 596 total runners. Wilbourn
Kosgei won the race with a stunning time of 1:14.11 in his half-marathon debut;
Ben Hall placed 2nd in 1:18.55, while Justin Edwards finished 3rd in 1:19.32,
respectively. Will Musto, Luke Copeland and Andrew Hege finish 7th,
8th and 12th overall,with respectable times of 1:24.23, 1:24.48, and
1:26.09.
Jared
Nielsen was also running a solid race, just seconds ahead of team mate Luke
Copeland, unfortunately he did not finish the race due to over-exhaustion; he
collapsed just before the 13th mile marker.
The women's team also shined in Albany. They
too dominated the female category by placing all five runners in the top ten
out of 338 female runners. Two freshmen led the Lady Cavs in their first
ever half-marathons, Elisabeth Elliott was the first for Montreat finishing as
the 4th female overall (1:30:33), followed by fellow freshman Lindsay Mizok (5th/1:32:58),
Arilicia Adkins (6th/1:33:55), Talisa Bishop (8th/1:36:46) and Kayla Suiter (9th)
rounded out the women's team; Suiter had a huge personal record time of
1:37.25.
Four individuals met the NAIA National Track & Field qualifying standards
earning them the right to represent Montreat College in the marathon.
Kosgei, Elliot, and Mizok all met the automatic "A" standard, while
Adkins hit the provisional "B" standard. They will join already
qualified Talisa Bishop, who qualified earlier in November in Jacksonville,
Florida with a time of 1:28.32. Bishop's time was also an "A"
standard.
The Cavaliers will kick off their outdoor track season during their Spring
Break trip to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando Florida.
The Cavaliers will be competing in the three day event, March 19-21.
