DUE WEST, SC (February 23, 2009) -- The Montreat College softball team traveled to Erskine College on Monday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader. Erskine swept the Cavaliers 8-7 and 6-0.
In game one, Montreat jumped on the scoreboard early in the first inning on an
Amber Summerow triple that would lead to a fielder's choice by
Olivia Huffman to score Summerow. Montreat attacked again in the third with
Tameron Sealey singled and scored on an
Erin Cross single to right field giving the Cavs a 2-0 lead.
Erskine would put a run up in the fourth, and Montreat would answer in the fifth with another run. Sealey reached first on an error, stole second base and would score on a Huffman single, giving them a 3-1 lead.
Erskine would answer with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings forcing an extra inning of play.
The bats came alive for the Cavs in the top of the eighth inning. Senior
Amy Vogel reached second base and scored on a
Mandi Pike's double.
Tiffany Davis had her first hit of the day, a double to score Pike. Davis would score on a
Jamie Poling's fielder's choice. Sealey had her third hit of the day as she singled to first, stole second, and reached home again on a double by Amber Summerow. With four runs scored in the eighth, Montreat had a 7-3 lead.
After seven innings pitched and giving up six runs on seven hits and striking out six batters, starting Cavalier pitcher
Meredith Mitchell came off the mound in the eigth inning.
Rachel Stowe would come in to try to finish the game for the Cavs.
Erskine also would spark their bats in the bottom of the eighth scoring the winning run to take game one 8-7 from the Cavaliers.
Leading hitters for Montreat:
It was all Erskine College in game two, as they only allowed one Montreat hit on their way to a 6-0 shutout. The game was called in the fifth inning due to darkness. Cavalier
Amber Summerow had the lone hit for the Cavaliers.
Montreat goes to 5-7 overall and returns to action on Saturday, February 28 as the team travels to Pfeiffer University for a double header. Game one is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
