MONTREAT, NC (February 17, 2009) -- The Montreat College women's softball hosted NCAA Division II Tusculum College on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader. Tusculum attacked early in the second hitting putting up two runs. Cavs put a run on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on a double by
Mandi Pike that scored
Meredith Mitchell. Mitchell had reached based on a double.
Tusculum would put another run up in the top of the fifth making it 3-1, and would do major damage in the sixth inning scoring four runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Montreat would score another run on another double by
Mandi Pike that would score pinch runner
Whitney Roper. Junior
Erin Cross started the effort in the sixth on a standup double. Senior
Amy Vogel would single to send Roper to third.
Montreat would not score another run giving Tusculum a 6-1 victory. Pike went 2-for-2 including two doubles and two RBI's. Meredith Mitchell picked up the loss on the mound.
In game two, behind another standout performance by
Rachel Stowe on the mound, the Cavs and Pioneers would remain scoreless until the fifth inning when junior
Kerby Barkdoll doubled,
Tiffany Davis singled, and
Rachel Stowe doubled scoring Barkdoll. Tusculum would score two runs in the top of the seventh going ahead 2-1 and forcing Montreat to score in the seventh.
Kerby Barkdoll again came up with a hit reaching first base. She would advanced to second on a Davis sacrifice bunt. Lead off batter,
Tameron Sealey singled and a shortstop error would allow Barkdoll to score, tieing the game at 2-2. Sealey would advance to second on the error. Senior
Amber Summerow connected for a single which allowed Sealey to score and give the Cavs a 3-2 win.
Stowe now goes to 3-1 on the year and had four strikeouts for the game.
The Cavs improve to 4-4 on the year and will remain at home on Saturday for a double header with another strong NCAA Division II team in Brevard College.
